Zambia’s WAFCON Exit: How the Copper Queens Won 2–1 and Still Went Home

Six points, the best goal difference in the group — but CAF’s head-to-head rules sent Zambia crashing out.

Zambia’s Copper Queens have suffered a heartbreaking early exit from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after finishing third in Group C, despite collecting six points and recording the best overall goal difference in the group.

The dramatic elimination came after Zambia defeated Malawi 2–1 in their final group match, a result that was not enough to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The result left Zambia, Malawi and Nigeria all tied on six points, forcing CAF’s head-to-head rules to determine which two teams would advance.

Zambia had done almost everything right

Zambia opened the group with a 6–0 win over Egypt and finished with a +6 goal difference, the best of the three tied teams.

They then beat Malawi 2–1, but Nigeria also won 6–2 over Egypt, meaning all three teams ended on six points.

With CAF using head-to-head records first, Zambia’s strong overall goal difference was ignored.

Head-to-head rules cut Zambia out

The mini-table among Zambia, Malawi and Nigeria put all three on three points.

CAF then compared goals scored in those head-to-head matches: Malawi 4, Nigeria 3, Zambia 2.

That was enough to eliminate Zambia, even though they had the best overall goal difference.

What it means

Malawi advance as Group C winners and Nigeria join them in the quarter-finals.

Zambia leave the tournament with six points, eight goals scored, two conceded and a +6 goal difference — but no place in the knockout stage.

Their exit is a painful reminder that in tournament football, the right tiebreaker can matter more than the scoreline.
